Construction/Trades - Building Our Dreams!

Man surpassed apes when we learned to use tools, civilization started to develop when we began building houses, infrastructure, cities, what would our lives be today without construction?  We are reliant on it the infrastructure and craftsmanship than define ages.  Pyramids defined Ancient Egypt, aqueducts, bridges, and roads defined ancient Rome, cathedrals and palaces defined medieval Europe.  Take a look at any modern city and you'll see it is the construction that defines it.  We think of New York and we think of the Empire State Building, Washington DC and the White House, London and Big Ben, Paris and the Eiffel tower, Toronto and the CN tower.  None of it would be possible without construction workers, trades people, craftsmen.

Most of what we do is only possible because of you.  It makes you invaluable to society, an essential component of our growth as a civilization.

Construction/Trades Career Tips

Construction workers and trades people face some of the most challenging work situations on the planet, constantly finishing a contract and looking for another, they also sometimes develop a bad reputation, here are some ways to counteract that:

  1. Be reliable, consistent, and loyal, in an industry with high turnover, where employees will leave a company for an extra $0.50/hr. it stands out to stay committed, find a place you like where they treat you well and you work hard, then remain loyal to them, it will pay off long term
  2. Develop resourcefulness, a can do attitude of hard work and problem solving, little is more respected than the reputation of being someone who can get things done
  3. Be the best at your trade, there are times when saying good enough is good enough is tempting, but being a master craftsman is worth gold if it's a habit you cultivate
  4. Pursue accredited designations like your journeyman ticket, you'll be worth more
  5. Be good at customer service, how you treat people is always important and you reflect on your company

These will hopefully help you over the course of your career.
